While researching about this song, I got quite startled. You see, for the longest time I’d thought the band was named Youth, and the song titled Daughter. Nope. As is the case with many (many, many, many) indie bands – I mixed band name with song title. I felt like an idiot.
Daughter – Youth
It has been a very long time since a song’s lyrics have caught my attention. Normally I’m very shallow with lyrical criticism; if music and melody are enjoyable, then I don’t usually care what the lyrics are about. Having said that, I couldn’t help but feel chills when I heard Elena Tonra sing “And if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones./’Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs/Setting fire to our insides for fun/Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong”. This coupled with the explosion of tribal drums and melancholic guitar lines that take place right after was enough to bring out the goosebumps.
Yes, Daughter is a gem among the indie folk scene.
